The Black Blades – New from October 2025!
I carved my very first light-painting blade holder out of a plumbing pipe back in 2012, inspired by the groundbreaking work of Patrick Rochon. At the time, I only had a few small acrylic samples, 4x6", clear and colored. But that was enough to create my first images of this kind, including the One Step Ahead project.
Fast-forward to 2025: I was still looking for a simple, solid way to connect my favorite flashlight (the Olight Warrior 3s) to tools other than tubes. That led to the design of the AX2 mount, a minimalist connector that finally made it possible to switch seamlessly between dimmers, tubes, blades, and whips, all with a single flashlight.
I designed it for myself. I designed it for you.
About the black blades
Over the years, I’ve learned that my favorite blades are always the newest ones, perfectly smooth, with crisp, scratch-free edges that let the light define the shape. Covering the blades in black turned out to be the ideal solution: it keeps reflections under control and preserves that razor-sharp edge forever.
Each blade is machine sanded to ensure a consistent balance between softness on the subject and sharpness in the light trace. The result is a clean, precise, and elegant look that stays consistent over time.
